How to Choose the Right Air Compressor (CFM, PSI & Size Guide)

Choosing the right air compressor comes down to one thing: making sure it can properly run your tools.

Quick Rule: Match your compressor’s CFM output to your tool’s required CFM.

Step 1: Check Your Air Tool Requirements

2.20 CFM @ 90 PSI

  • CFM = air volume
  • PSI = pressure

Step 2: Understand CFM vs PSI

CFM determines if your tool runs properly. PSI determines pressure.

If your compressor doesn’t meet CFM, your tool won’t perform correctly.

Step 3: Adjust for Continuous Use

  • 1–4 hours: multiply CFM × 2
  • 6+ hours: multiply CFM × 3
